Towns in Italy, even the smallest, need little excuse to put on a celebration. This year when Anne and I arrived at Castellammare del Golfo on the north west coast of Sicily, they were celebrating the centenary of the construction of stairs from the main part of the town to the port- the old stairs- antiche scale.
The stairs were decked with coloured canvasses and there were stalls selling wonderful local produce. Paintings and photographs of the town, acrobats, and a fantastic "teatro del ombre- shadow puppet theatre- were equally entertaining.
