One of our local authorities, Wansbeck District Council is in the dog house. The council are in charge of the beach at Newbiggin by the Sea. They have just spent ten million quid bringing back the beach and sea front to, what the council describe as, "it's former glory". Part of the scheme involved importing 500,000 tonnes of sand from Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast. And a wonderful addition was another piece of public art for our region. OK, not as large as the Angel of the North, but impressive none the less.
"The Couple", a 5.5 metre bronze sculpture by Sean Henry has been installed 300 meters out to sea.
Oh, and back to the dog house.
The Wansbeck Council has just announced a consultation with the local residents to see just how popular a complete ban on dogs from that 500,000 tonnes of prime Lincolnshire sand would be.
A couple more claims to fame. Its Lifeboat Station has been in continuous use for 150 years and the first telegraph cable from Scandinavia was hauled from the beach in 1868......
....and John Braine was working in the local library when he wrote "Room at the Top".
