Next week BBC 2 latest flagship wildlife show starts.
"Saving Planet Earth" is a nine ten parter. Each week a celebrity asks the audience for money to save a particular species of endangered animal.
You can see a list of the animals and their accompanying celebrities here.
What amazes me is that there are no plants or insects in the list. In fact NO invertebrates at all. Yet this group includes 97% of all animal species.
It seems ridiculous that such a large group, with many on the 2006 IUCN "Red list of endangered species, has been ignored.
In the UK there is a species of spider close to extinction.
The Fen Raft Spider- Dolomedes plantarius
O.K, the Fen Raft Spider does not have the AHHHH factor of the baby orang utan, the cuteness of a baby elephant or the intelligent eyes of a gorilla, but surely it deserves our attention?
