Unfortunately, "No photography" is becoming the general rule. I was one day informed that photography was not permitted on the London Underground, having taken photos there on many occasions in the past.

In Euston, in what I thought was the street, I was challenged by a gent in a suit and told not to take photos as I was standing on property owned by British Land, who do not permit photographs to be taken. He did point out that I could retire a few paces and take as many photos as I wished for I would then be standing on pavement owned by the Borough of Camden.

The worrying factor, as the article makes clear is that these rules are often made but not announced so that people break them without realizing it. Under such circumstances, it is unsurprising if people protest which in turn makes those enforcing the ban irritable and thus a vicious cycle is created.
