It's been an exceptionally busy couple of weeks on Plot#12. We have completed turning over two thirds of the plot and have now arrived at the foothills of Ernie's mound. Ernie was the previous tenant of Plot#12. I suspect this was where he piled up his uncompostable rubbish. Flattening it and getting it ready for cultivation is next year's major project.
The main crop spuds-Romano- have gone in, as have the earlies- Pink fir.
Onion sets are coming away- that's the expression used- and we have decided to try a small row of shallots. The garlic planted last autumn appears to have overwintered well. The raspberries have produced a good crop of shoots. But sadly no crop this year so the canes will produce a skip load next year. The strawberry plants are showing flowers.
And today, beetroot and spring onion seeds have been planted. Courgettes, chard, carrots , spinach beans-broad and french- together with salads are hardening off at home. The soil is now warm enough to plant them out. This is in the diary for next week.
And another crop- the tadpoles in Ernie's pools- are just about to sprout their front legs, and soon they will become truly amphibious no doubt looking forward to a diet of snails and slugs!
At lunchtime today, I accepted our first load of "muck".
Magic stuff. If you look carefully you can see the steam.
