In October 1997, Tony Blair signed to preface to a White Paper " Rights Brought Home".
It explained the Human Rights Bill which, following a manifesto commitment, was introduced into Parliament shortly afterwards.
Below Tony's portrait was this:
"This White Paper explains the proposals
contained in the Human Rights Bill which we
are introducing into Parliament. The Bill
marks a major step forward in the
achievement of our programme of reform. It
will give people in the United Kingdom
opportunities to enforce their rights under
the European Convention in British courts
rather than having to incur the cost and delay
of taking a case to the European Human
Rights Commission and Court in Strasbourg. It
will enhance the awareness of human rights
in our society. And it stands alongside our
decision to put the promotion of human
rights at the forefront of our foreign policy.
I warmly commend these proposals to Parliament and to the people of this country.
TONY BLAIR
Like his failure to make the European case, to support HIS Human Rights Act in the face of the Murdoch press, now see just what a weak, spineless fibber he is.
Many thanks. This post and its two immediate predecessors are a splendid quarry of information required to correct the spectacular distortions of the prime minister, home secretary and the more shameless tabloids. I have added an update of 16 May accordingly to my own blog post of the 13th at http://tinyurl.com/mv935.
