Although the weather this weekend as they say "wasn't Miami", it was dry and just about warm enough to make our first real working visit to Plot 12 in 2006. Since new year we had made the occasional visit to check things were all right, as well as delivering the kitchen waste that now goes onto the compost heap.
Anne got on with preparing the ground for the spuds. They will have to wait until the soil warms up a bit more-probably April- before planting. The onion sets, weather permitting, will be planted this week.
I was double digging the last third of the plot before I reach the foothills of Ernie's rubbish heap.
The two ponds were full of frog spawn.
Worth its weight in gold I'm told as an adult frog can to consume its own weight in slugs/snails in the summer.
The garlic cloves have shot up and like the strawberry plants appear to have over-wintered pretty well. The cabbage plants seem to have provided winter fodder for slugs.
I met another plotter. I thought I recognised her but I hadn't a clue
what her name was until I heard someone call out "Clare". Clare Routledge-she was a
solicitor who worked in South Shields over twenty five years ago. Small world!
